SALES AND WANTS

Friday, December 21st, 2012

While visiting our members it’s amazing how many items of unused
farm machinery is abandoned among the grass. These pieces of equipment could be of use to fellow members either to replace
their own or even for spares. If you fall into this category please
email us with as much information as possible along with your guide
price. Likewise, any members looking for equipment can send
us their requests. We are about to update our tired website where we
hope to be able to set this up on our new webpage. Contact Scott on 01738 550 101

RURAL SERVICES SCOTLAND – A Machinery Ring in the true sense of the word

Friday, December 21st, 2012

Just as with everything else we
have to move with the times, when
the said Machinery Rings were
formed 25 years ago they were
based mainly to share agricultural
machinery. As we have moved
on the smaller farming units have
disappeared as they have become
less viable only to be swallowed up
by the neighbours next door. These
larger units now require larger
equipment to carry out tasks at
home, to cover ground as quickly
as possible in the ever increasing
challenge to beat the weather. Due
to this they have very little time to
work away from home.
To compensate machinery rings have had to
adapt to changes some more so than others,
some of them have now become commodity
traders and seem to have drifted from the
traditional concept of machinery rings.
Here at Rural Services Scotland we still aim
to please all by using members in their own
locality to carry out tasks or requests that have
been asked of, remembering big isn’t always
beautiful.
We ask our members to use Rural Services
Scotland to its full potential not just for the
odd thing they are unsure how to source.
Our aim is to serve our member base to the
best of our ability at all times. Your support
and business is greatly appreciated.

POLICE NEWS

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

I’m sure everyone is as sick of the wet weather and the additional pressures this will be putting on
members of the farming community. If we ever get the weather to start the harvest I would ask that you
bear in mind the following to prevent any unwanted attention from the Police and prevent incidents
occurring.
WEIGHTS
Remember the maximum permissible train weight for a tractor and trailer combination is 24390
kilogram’s, Always remember that weights will vary depending on the soil conditions and moisture
content of any load carried. Also remember the additional weight of a full tank of fuel.
MANNER OF DRIVING
Speed limits within built up areas are the maximum permitted speed however this does not mean this is
the safe speed. We have already received complaints regarding the manner of driving of some tractors
within the town and surrounding villages.
The days of the tractor travelling at 15mph are long gone and high speed gearboxes are now fitted to
many tractors. Please watch your speed in the built up areas.
The general public will complain and in the current climate, action will be taken. Keep this in mind and
this should prevent any unwanted attention.
MOBILE TELEPHONES
The use of mobile telephones seems to be on the increase with several tractor drivers having already
being detected and issued with 3 points and a £60 fine.
SEATBELTS
With regards to the law if a vehicle is fitted with a seatbelt it must be used when travelling on the public
roads. I am aware that lap belts are fitted to most modern tractors and whilst it is very difficult to see if
it is being used. I would ask that you consider your own safety first.
Sadly I have attended numerous Road Traffic Collisions involving agricultural machines and many have
resulted in fatal and serious injury due to the operator not wearing the seatbelt. Recently there was a
serious collision whereby a vehicle collided into the rear of a tele-handler as it travelled down the A90,
The force of the impact was so great that the tele-handler was pushed over 70 metres down the road and
the chassis of the forklift was bent.
Thankfully the driver was wearing the lap belt and was not seriously injured, had he not been wearing
it, I have little doubt that he would have been thrown out the rear window of the machine.
Always remember if you are involved in a collision, your vehicle will be examined and any issues
raised will be dealt with. It is also worth remembering that VOSA (Vehicle Operator Services Agency)
now have the power to stop vehicles and have been paying attention to agricultural vehicles. They will
report and prohibit any defective vehicles and this could have a major impact on your operations in the
middle of the harvest.
Please remember we are here to help and would rather give advice to prevent accidents and negate
the requirement for any enforcement.

RENEWABLES

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

We have been asked by a member to find
out about baled wholecrop and silage
for sale to anaerobic digester plants in
the locality (Perthshire and Fife). The
requirement would be in the order of
3000 to 9000 tonnes of product and I
would like to see our members getting a
piece of this action.
Do you have availability to grow
crops for the Renewables market? The
organisation will install and operate
proven Biogas anaerobic digestion
plants with no requirement for capital
investment from the farmer buy will
offer long term index-linked feedstock
contracts to grow and supply bioenergy
crops. There would also be the
opportunity of having a supply of high
quality bio fertiliser available.
You could become the contractor
producing the crop and supplying
the contractors to carry out the work.
Would you like to speak to someone
about this potential business venture?
Opportunities like this do not come
along very often.

WASTE! WASTE! WASTE!

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

Regretfully our member, Ray Marshall
from Aberfeldy, the “SOLWAY” collector of
farm plastics has decided to retire from the
transporting of plastic waste.
We now have to contact Solway direct to get
any plastic bags uplifted by their own transport
and have arranged that the vehicle will be in
the area every so often so that there is not
a build-up of waste lying about the farms.
Phone the office for us to liaise with Solway to
ensure that all who require their services can
get best service.
The cost of this seasons collection is £25 per
liner or capped at £90 for as much bale wrap
or silo pit covers as you have to get rid off.
(This material can be uplifted in Solway liners
or LOOSE). Other types of waste plastic can
also be collected at £25 per full liner.
We are also able to offer a free waste oil
collection from your farm, subject to a
minimum volume of 200 litres (45 gallon
drum).
The latest advice from Solway is that they are
able now to recycle your Poly Tunnel covers
and they will make a payment for these.
Again contact the office with information on
what you have for disposal.
Solway can also assist you in recycling and
disposal of Tyres, Batteries, Used Oil Filters,
Redundant Agrochemicals, Redundant
Veterinary Medicines and Sheep Dip. There
would be a cost associated with this. If you
have a problem with any of these items, please
contact the office and we’ll get you a price for
the removal.
As always we can get recycling bins and liners
for you if you wish to keep everything round
the farm in tidy condition for removal.
The AGRI waste stream 1 is Silage Wrap; Silage
Pit Covers, Small Feed and Fert Bags; Plastic
Packaging. AGRI waste stream 2 is Bulk Fert
Bags; Bulk Feed Bags; Bulk Seed Bags. AGRI
waste stream 3 would be Rigid Plastic Drums
and Containers which MUST BE Triple Rinsed
and AGRI stream 4 is Net Wrap or String.
The Solway Bin System allows the farmer to
have segregated bins for the different materials
found on farm and ensures that there are no
unsightly mounds of black plastic that blows
around everywhere. Again if you need a
quote for a Solway Bin let the office know on

SUPPLYING CALCIFERT GRANULATED LIME

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

CALCIFERT

GRANULATED LIME is proven to neutralise soil acidity.  It is for all crops including grassland, cereals, fruit and oilseed rape.

Made from fine limestone flour combined with a water-soluble organic binder, Califert consists of hard granules of between 2 and 5mm in diameter, and is produced in the UK from limestone mined in the Peak District thus saving on miles travelled.

CALCIFERT is approved by the Soil Association standards for non-organic raw materials for use in organic farming.

The benefits of liming include:  the lowering of toxic levels of aluminium and manganese; overcoming the potential for calcium or magnesium deficiencies, improves soil structures; improved animal health – more appropriate nutrient profile in the forage.

CALCIFERT            can be applied using fertiliser spreaders rather than using lime contractors for bulk lime, and can be used at any time of the year. Ideal for spot treating problem areas with small amounts and can be stored with ease.

Can you afford not to lime?  The price of inorganic fertilisers across the world today, mean that their efficient utilisation is a must.  At an environmental level it helps maintain the structure of the soils in cultivation  and reduce their degradation through acidification and erosion.  It also helps REDUCE the amount of fertilisers required due to the improved efficiency of utilisation.

CALCIFERT has a calcium carbonate of approximately 98%.  Recent independent laboratory analysis (5th to 26th November 2010) showed G-Lime (Acheson & Glover) as having a TNV of 91.29% and a reactivity of 24.67%.  In comparison, CALCIFERT had a TNV of 98.44% and a reactivity of 52.66%;  CALCIFERT had twice the reactivity.

Technical information and supplies of Calcifert can be supplied through the office.  Phone with your requirements to 01738 550 101.
